Garden Chores for February

~ weeding, weeding, weeding

~ removing dead materials, cutting down spent perennials, scraping up plants that didn't make it through the intense cold period (California poppies)

~ removing unwanted plants and shrubs and bulbs that are in the wrong area

~ fruit tree trimming

~grape vine pruning

~ assessing the compost piles, turning over, shovelling out

~ planning new beds

~ ordering and sowing seeds

~ this is the time to start your peppers and tomatoes

~ continuing a greenhouse clean out and selling off no longer wanted items

~ tending to neglected houseplants

 

Also known as common yarrow, this North American native is a super easy to care for perennial with a range of coloured flowers and fern-like leaves.  Averaging 3 feet in height, it loves full sun and well drained soil, making it a perfect choice for drought tolerant gardens.  Yarrows are great as cut flowers and dry well for long lasting dried arrangements.  

We have a few varieties growing in the greenhouse now - yellow, berry, and pink (and trying terra cotta but it's proving to be a challenge).  They'll be ready for purchase at the Spring Fling.
